Charles de Trenck is trained in Chinese, business and comparative literature, having obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees from Georgetown, The American Graduate School of Int’l Management and UCLA. Charles, while still at Kerry Securities, began looking at shipping and global trade intensely as an analyst around 1994. At UBS in 1997, then at CSFB in 1997-99 and then at Salomon Smith Barney/Citigroup in 1999-2008, Charles deepened his transport experience covering containerized transport, bulk and tanker shipping, and airlines. Charles was Head of Transport for just about all his tenure at SSB/Citi Invst Rsh, sometimes as sole sector analyst and later as Team Head, with the team initially often ranked in top 3 and later ranked #1 by Institutional Investor and Asiamoney, as well as other client polls. Corporate work was important at times, but sell-side, institutional investor work predominated. Charles is also the founder and managing director of Transport Trackers, a Hong Kong-based independent transport advisory specializing in cargo flows, shipping and related macro trends.
